Here, Issa Asad Explains How to Become a Better Entrepreneur in 2018:
1. Say who you really are
The conventional introductory mode is “what do you specialize in?” It’s time to change the norm and forget about this old fashioned networking method. Why not offer an introduction that portrays your real delight and stimulates people to listen to you more? In his efforts to brand himself as an executive coach, Osorio stated that he used an interactive approach that allowed people to understand and share in his passion.
What if you are not good at introducing the real you? The following can be your starting point:
- “Hello, I am Oliver and I have embarked on this interesting project which I have been brainstorming for a while now….”
- “Hi, I go by the name Danielle and am currently doing a project in collaboration with…”
The moment you initiate authentic discussions about your area of interest with others, you establish meaningful networks as people genuinely become interested in you.
2. Initiate a genuine and relevant conversation
Genuine networking with others is preceded by a genuine conversation. It is only through genuine conversations that new connections are cultivated not only in business but also in your personal life. A great topic of discussion stimulates enthusiasm, is characterized by largely similar perspectives on issues and is nothing short of originality. A good way to cultivate new relationships is to inquire what the other person is passionate about. Probe about the person’s future perspective. In the process, you will not only acquire new role models, heroes/heroines but also potential business associates in a quick manner.
3. Work on reinforcing the connections you have established
Let’s say you have successfully managed to project the real you and had a really wonderful and real conversation. What should be the next course of action that you should implement? You need to do a follow up with your new contact(s). This ought to be done in two to three weeks’ time assuming that you were wise enough to ask them to give you their business card. Do a follow up by calling the person over the phone. It is also a wise idea to suggest a brief meeting over a cup of tea. The focus here is to ensure you have reinforced the relationship that you worked so hard to initiate in the first place. Woo your new contact(s) to be motivated to work with you by extending your service thus proving to be of value to them. You will increase your chances of taking the relationship to a more beneficial level in future. Eventually, your networking efforts will pay off.
